The most awaited cultural event in Chennai, the talents of numerous schools across the city displayed in a short span of three days, with a vibrant background of music, celebrities and pure energy. Yes, you guessed it. Reverberations 2010, the brainchild of the PSBB schools.
Day Zero was held in the home grounds in PSBB KKNagar and for eight hours, the preliminary rounds for various events like adzap, shipwreck and debatito continued. The judges for these events were the alumni of both the schools. The final rounds for the sports events (FIFA, DOTA and AAA) as well as photography took place on Day Zero. In addition to that, Reverbs Ink, the tattoo competition, judged by the owner of Ire Zumi was held on the same day.
Day one and Day two were held in Vani Mahal. Day one, after being formally inaugurated by Mrs. Sheela Rajendra, began with a boom with the host performance by KKNagar students for the western music events. Following that was the spoof theatre judged by two very famous personalities, ‘Crazy’ Mohan and Mr. Ramesh. KKNagar students followed by the Nungambakkam students blew the stage away with their respective host performances for the Group dance event.
DJ Ashok, who has been attending Reverberations for the last five odd years, kept the audience moving to his beats. Whilst the Mini Hall was the host to the finals of debatito and shipwreck, Channel Surfing, judged by Melvin, and JAM, moderated by the extremely articulate Naveen Thomas were held in the Main Hall.
On Day two, the tension eked out of everyone as the final day had dawned. The benignity in the room was easily replaced by a sense of serenity as the host performance for light music took off, and the auditorium echoed with the stunningly moving tones of both schools’ students. ‘Ghatam’ Vidwan Sri Uma Shankar, Ajeesh –of Airtel Super Singer fame – and playback singer Anita judged the event.
Just as the finals for the quiz took place in the Main Hall, the Mini Hall was flooded with audience when the Adzap finals took place, judged by comedians Mr. Santhanam and Mr. Jagan.
Last, but not the least, the grand finale, the climax of the show, the all awaited end, the selection of Master /Ms. Reverberations! The audience watched in open-mouthed amusement as the seven finalists battled it out on stage through a series of contests like eat-o-mania and shipwreck, to determine who was the winner of the largest school culturals of Chennai. While the results were tallied, our Chief Guest, the incomparable and the extremely talented Mr. T. M. Krishna, gave his views of Reverberations ’10, giving it a firm thumbs-up and encouraged us to promote more classical events, a thought heartily seconded by our Dean, Mrs. YGP. Our Guest of Honour, Arya, the man that made every girl in the crowd swoon, put in his two cents just before Vidya Mandir was announced as the overall winner of Reverberations ’10.
Hearty congratulations to the teachers, students and volunteers who made the event possible, and a special mention for their ‘Go Green’ initiative must be made. Reverberations more than lived up to its name and fame, and its energy will be felt for many years to come.

Commerce club activity 2010 – 2011
In keeping with the traditions of excellence that PSBB forever strives to meet and excel, the business quiz was held on the 25th of November 2010. The quiz was conducted by the popular combination of Kartik.V.S and Karthikeyan of XII C. Six students apiece were chosen from XI C and XII C and paired up to form six teams. The quiz kicked off with the first round, which consisted of twelve questions. Kartik was at his humorous best, enthralling the audience with a ready mixture of wit and suave. The audience was thoroughly hooked and it was time to hand over the mic to Karthikeyan for round two. The round required the skilful identification of logos. The extra information provided by the textbook really helped the participants solve the questions. The concepts, which were brilliantly taught by Mr Devakumar, really helped the students answer the toughest of questions with élan.
The quiz was progressing at a frenetic pace and the reins were handed over to the ever-debonair Kartik. This was the challenging buzzer round, a round where lesser quizzers would have trembled and cracked under the strain and pressure. The fine crop of quizzers that PSBB produces, however, met them face on and the round took place in a titanic battle of reflexes and nerves. Based on the skilful application of textual concepts such as Shares and debentures along with business management concepts were a thorough treat. By now, it all came down to the slog. Huge points were at stake in the final round. Huger reputations were on the line. Diverse pictures and logos were skillfully and intricately woven together into a single company. The participants racked their brains to weave the strands of diverse concepts into the fabric of a single answer. This is where the humorous and insightful teaching of Mr Devakumar was a lifesaver.
The victors were the dynamic duo of Vinayak Sasikumar of XII C and Amrith Bhargav of XI C. The quiz will go down in the annals of PSBB history as one of the finest and most humorous quizzes held on the premises.

Career Counseling Session – Business Management
Languages were always perceived as a soft option by most students – a device for pumping up scores and a weapon of the intellectually challenged. The career counseling session on the 22nd of July 2010 showed us all that this surmise is as far from the truth as possible.
Mr. Neelameghan Muralidharan, an entrepreneur with an amazing flair for languages, gave us, the Commerce Students, an exemplary speech on the pros of business management as an option and the need for learning multiple languages. He discussed the importance of the IT Sector and highlighted the remarkable impact finance has on all our lives. The inclusion of anecdotes from his own life, made the speech more interesting.
He went on to talk about the need for fine-tuning our communication skills and provided smart analogies, which drove his points home. He shared his experiences and “shortcuts” with us and gave an informative power point presentation. Throughout this session, he asked and answered questions, making the whole experience an interactive one.
He wound up his speech to much applause and took his leave after giving us a lot of food for thought.

PRESENT DAY ACADEMICS
The inaugural debate of the Debating Society of PSBB Nungambakkam was held on the 20th of July 2010. The motion on the floor was “This house believes that present day academics is driving the students away from real learning”. The judges were Mrs. Vijaylakshmi Raman, HOD, Department of English, Mrs. Anita Nagaswami, PTA Member and Meenakshi Srinivasan of Std. XII
Purva, Malavika, Rishikesh and Lakshminarayanan from classes X and XI of the proposition faced off against Prajay, Harshini, Amritha and Ranjini of classes IX, X and XI from the opposition.
The proposition dealt with several important points like the different boards and syllabi and the pressure children faced owing to the above. They compared rote learning to real learning, and bald facts to innovation. They explained the pain of students to whom grades proved demoralizing and competition caused obsession. With the last speaker giving us an insight into the difference between memorizing textbooks and mastering a subject, the proposition rested their substantial case.
Competing with them neck to neck was the opposition, full of fact, example and analysis. With proof to the success of the Indian education system, research concerning its different changes and dilution, a testimony to its adaptation, and arguments showing why the yet imperfect system still had more pros than all the other existing ones, the opposition swept the judges off their feet.
Fierce and full of conviction, the rebuttal was the cherry on the absolutely delicious ice cream, this debate thus giving a perfect start to the debating activities of our school.
With the closing comments of the judges, the students dispersed, happy that they were able to witness a fitting start to the proceedings of the club.
Ranjini, Harshini and Amritha, all from the opposition were adjudged the best speakers, and the opposition was declared the winner. In a nutshell, the debate was lively, entertaining and of high standard.

FACE OFF: NUNGAMBAKKAM Vs K.K.NAGAR
On the fifth of July 2010, a busload of enthusiastic students made their way to PSBB K.K.Nagar to cheer on their team. A team of seven, skilled in Rhetoric, ready to take on the team from K.K.Nagar for the second round of debating.
This time, in keeping with tradition, the teams were given impromptu motions. The debate, held at Silver Jubilee Hall, was judged by Mr.B.G. Krishnan, an erstwhile debator and alumnus of our school; Mr.A.R.Srnivasan, a veteran actor and playwright and Mr. T.T.Srinath, a successful entrepreneur.
The teams debated on a range of topics from art to environment. The motions were as follows:
· It is the artist and not the critic who contributes to society
· ‘I’ is more important than ‘We’
· Food on a plate is more important than a few trees.
· Freedom of Expression is being abused through Freedom of Press.
· There is no such thing as friendly competition.
· We could forgive and forget.
· The sun is sinking in the west.
The teams from K.K.Nagar took away the overall trophy, but not without an engaging battle with the students of Nungambakkam. Arguments and rebuttal rent the air and it was an enjoyable experience for all. The first five prizes were bagged by Visruth Venkat, Meenakshi Srinivasan, Akila, Sanjanaa and V.S.Karthik, the first, third and fourth prizes being awarded to K.K.Nagar students.
The students were immensely grateful for the opportunity provided by the school management and faculty, and this debate officially inaugurated the activities of The Debating Society for the year 2010-11.

GSP Visit 2010-11: The Reepham Reverie
Visiting the Reepham High School as part of the GSP representing PSBB has been a life time opportunity for the entire team. After a there hour drive from Heatrhrow we were received by the faculty and host families at Reepham High School.
On Thursday the 8th July we attended the briefing session at the staffroom. Then we went to the assembly and left for a visit to the Cawston Primary school, accredited with the ISA award. The sprawling primary school boasts of all amenities that facilities learning in the young. The colourful corridors provide ample scope for creativity to be displayed in imaginative splendours. In the afternoon we were taken on a guided tour of RHS by two volunteers. Mr Tim Reeve te GSP coordinator hosted dinner on Thursday. He has transformed a barn into a lovely villa and we watched ‘Chasing Sunlight’ – A movie on the Reepham students visit to India in February 2010.
On Friday, the 9th July we were taken on a tour to Norwich. We visited the famous Norwich Cathedral. The Herb Garden was fascinating. We walked down the Elm Hill Lane. We had lunch at the town Guild Hall and left for the Univ of East Anglia. The Sainsbury Art Exhibition was out of the world. We were hosted a dinner at Waffles at Norwich by the Reepham faculty.
On Saturday, we left for London. The \national Express took us from Norwich to |Liverpool Street. Travelling by the London tube rail was quite an experience. We went shopping at the Saturday market at Portobello. The royal walk from West minister Abbey through St James Park to the Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden Market gave us a glimpse of the busy London Life. It was a stark contrast to the tranquil Norfolk life.
On Sunday, we visited the Queen garden at Sandringham. In the evening we had a typical English tea at Ross place. On Monday we had the great opportunity of taking classes for the Reepham students.
Tuesday was the D day as we entertained the Reepham students in the morning assembly. The programme began with PSBB prayer by the students followed by a power point by Mrs Sheela Rajendra our correspondent, oN iNdia the pinnacle of Human Civilisation. She made it interactive and the students were able to identify the Taj Mahal and some of the musical instruments like the sitar.
Nikilesh surya , Abbhinav and Chandrasekhar conducted the Spin a Yarn speaking contest. They had a demo of the event and two boys volunteered to participate. The vice principal was all in appreciation for this event as he felt it involves nimble thinking, creativity and humour. Small souvenirs were given as prizes to the two boys. Mrs Shiela Rajendra, Gayathri and Ishitha sang ‘ Maithreem Bhajatha- the song of the Universal peace. The students sang the GSP anthem which was a song composed by Mrs Vijayalakshmi Raman, summing up the three years of GSP activities. The highlight was the gift we had brought all the way from India. Two Carrom boards for Reepham were presented to the principal Mr Chris Hassell as a taken of our love and affection.
In the afternoon, we went to the beach at Sheringham. The pre departure dinner at Mrs Dianne Randle’s house was awesome.
Since Monday, Mrs Sheila, Ishita and Gayathri were busy with their mehendi session and the whole forenoon of Wednesday. Students kept thronging the library to have their hands decked with mehendi designs.
Seven days in Norfolk fleeted past. The English country side , the unpredictable English weather, the wonderful drive round the country side, the hospitable faculty, the enthusiastic students, the endearing hosts – all these made our trip memorable nay’ historic’.

TEA Workshop

Teacher Exchange Achievement(TEA) two day worshop was conducted by our teaher,Mrs.Mahalakshmi Ramjee (TEA Alumna) and her US counterpart Mr.Daniel Greenstone on February 11 and 12 of 2010 at school's administrative block. The program was a part of International Research Exchange(IREX) reciprocal visit. The workshop dealt with various topics connected to education methods, material and management.
Prasanna Dhamodharan of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidhyashram had the following to say about the workshop:
"Namasthey and good evening to each of you who have gathered here. Let me begin to record my comments from the beginning of the program yesterday. Right from the moment Dr.(Mrs.)YGP entered the room all of us waited with a sense of anticipation. Te novelty of the two day workshop began with a prayer song sung by the students of PSBB. I am sure all of you here too, like me, kept wondering of the duo were suitors or twins and that was the mood of the whole workshop- suspense and revelation Frankly speaking, when I opted to attend the workshop to my HOD I was mentally prepared for the run of the mill kind of workshop. I expected a lot of what we learnt in B.Ed theory classes –most of which were easy to preach but difficult to practically implement in a classroom situation. But to my pleasant surprise I enjoyed the 2 days here and have learnt a lot of skills checking out which I can now go back to my classroom and practice Mr.Greentone and Mrs.Ramjee have opened up a Pandora’s box for us. There was never a moment of boredom because both of them had thoroughly prepared for their presentations. Some of what was spoken is already practiced by us . But most of the topics had a lot of improvisation and instructions, which will help us, become better teachers.Mr. Greenstone’s rich experience in the US school gave us a perspective of how lucky we are to be teaching in India and not it the US! But nonetheless, we should heed his advice because in a comparative study we found that our Indian student generation are fast catching up with their American counterparts and the is not far off when we too will be in his shoes. They say fore warmed is forearmed, so thank you Mr.Greenstone for mentally preparing. As PSBB’s counselor Mrs.Ananthi Karthic said “Yesterday, all of us had at some point of time have also been counselors in our classrooms, schools, home and society”. Yes, it is very true ma’am. This morning’s session with Mrs.Hemalatha Seshardri was really interesting. ‘Civics‘as we were taught through the open was really boring. But now tih the introduction of ‘Democratic Politics’, our daily life has stepped into classroom teaching, especially for those of us who are able to correlate the news items to our daily teachings. The GIS in developing map skills by Mr.Jaganathan took us back to our geography classes as students – ‘It was mind blowing!’. Mrs.Vaidehi’s presentation on the use of Rubrics and the presentation on scientific literary and English education obey Mrs.Vasanthi was interesting and educative.Let me conclude by congratulating Mrs.Ramjee, Mr. Greenstone and all the other speakers for sharing their thoughts with us. Yesterday and today have definitely been a learning experience for all of us. Thank you so much.On behalf of all the teaching faculty, I take this opportunity to wish Mr. Daniel Greenstone all the best in career. Wish you Good health and happiness always .i hope that you will carry back beautiful memories of Indian students and teachers back with you to the US.Good luck and Thank You. "
